How the transition to a graphic design career?

I was considering a four-year degree in graphic design. I am artistic talent and I have two full years of art foundation courses illustration Ringling School of Art & Design. I have a marketing background with exposure to CRM, online media, web tracking and analysis. Does anyone have any ideas on the transition in the field of graphic design?

Well my thoughts are, it sounds as if they already have some background. Therefore a degree 4 years time will not benefit much. Your question is a bit general, and not a list of specific weaknesses, so it is difficult to diagnose accurately. If you do not already know, you want to learn what design is really doing some research online. I would say choose an area of graphic design you want to do, such as web, identity, illustration, advertising, etc and build a portfolio of about 10-15 pieces in this area. That may mean getting jobs oneself from Craigslist or your local newspaper. It may mean learning software such as Photoshop and Illustrator different if you have not known. Want to work alone? In an agency? Full time, part time or contract? You may want to build some self-promotion pieces and send them to various companies. (Go to your local library and get 2008 Mary Cox of the artist and graphic designer for market a huge list, and some good advice). Best of luck.
